Although we may be satisfied with how things run in Wisconsin's district courts, an occasional reevaluation can keep us in tune with timely issues and new ways in which other courts are finding success. This session will draw from our audience's courtroom experiences in other jurisdictions, and focus on possible opportunities to improve.

We'll first share the way other courts manage litigation, both civil and criminal.  We'll also discuss whether standing orders or local rules requirements are more appropriate for particular aspects of litigation and why. We'll close with a brief discussion concerning the application of new sentencing guidelines for crimes involving crack cocaine.

Questions that will be discussed include:

  • Are Specialized Local Rules Helpful in Patent Cases?
  • Can Early In-Chambers Discussions Help Cases Go Smoothly?
  • Is Oral Argument Underrated?
  • When Are Telephonic Appearances Not Suitable?
  • Summary Judgment Procedures: Onerous or Inadequate?
  • Standing Orders versus Local Rules - The Benefits and Disadvantages of Both

Audience members are encouraged to think about procedures they've observed in other courts, whether the procedures were useful or terrible, and raise these for discussion at the session.
